Synesthetique è la nuova rubrica per t-mag a cura di Anna Vittoria Magagna che racconta le arti visive che coinvolgono multiple sfere sensoriali, dal suono e la musica, al linguaggio fino alla scultura, pittura e performance.

Simone Bertuzzi (1983) e Simone Trabucchi (1982) collaborano con lo pseudonimo di Invernomuto dal 2003. L’immagine in movimento e il suono sono i mezzi di ricerca privilegiati del duo; scultura, editoria e pratiche dal vivo sono altre delle sue varianti.

Ci tenevo molto a intervistarvi per questa rubrica che affronta il tema di dialogo tra video, suono, scultura e installazione.

Vedi una sinestesia all’interno del vostro lavoro in questo senso? Oppure si transita da un medium ad un altro come espressione, o si amplia per modalità collaborativa con altri artisti?

Invernomuto nasce come un duo, aspirando ad essere un collettivo. Questa tensione al lavoro collettivo si è concretizzata spesso in svariate forme di collaborazioni volte ad espandere la ricerca e l’immaginario. In questo senso, il nostro lavoro è sempre una visione collettiva, osservando gli immaginari e assistendo alla loro evoluzione nel tempo.

Rispetto ai media, non abbiamo mai avuto una propensione verso la produzione mono-media, non ci è mai interessato lavorare in modo univoco. Il video è sicuramente il medium privilegiato, ma adottiamo sempre un approccio mix-mediale.

Abbiamo sempre lavorato in termini espansi, anche l’opera non è mai un corpus unico ma è sempre un insieme di elementi: una traccia sonora, una scultura o un’installazione olfattiva. Cerchiamo di mantenere quindi un grado di libertà importante sul piano della formalizzazione. Sicuramente essere in due ci permette di avere sempre un dialogo attivo su tutto quello che facciamo.

Quali sono i tuoi riferimenti? Potresti dirmi un artista o un musicista a cui guardi?

Ci siamo conosciuti nel 2003 ed era un periodo strano a livello storico, finivano tutta una serie di esperienze sottoculturali. È stato un periodo un po’ grigio con influenze onnivore. Simone Bertuzzi veniva dall’Hip Hop e io (Trabucchi) dal Punk/HC. Sicuramente incontrare tanta musica elettronica di quel periodo dei primi 2000 e andare a ritroso su cose più classiche/storiche è stato molto formativo.

Tutto quello che è successo in quegli anni è stato importante per la nostra formazione.: dall’hip hop astratto alla scena noise diy.

Nei nostri primi anni sicuramente aver guardato tanto New America Cinema ha sviluppato un approccio all’immagine in movimento felicemente sperimentale.

Potreste dirmi qualcosa di più del vostro archivio di Black Med? La volontà era quella di presentare un indice del Mediterraneo? Oppure aveva un obiettivo di ricerca privo di storie e geografie specifiche?

Black med si forma proprio dai presupposti di collaborazione di cui abbiamo parlato prima, configurandosi come un archivio in progress sul Mediterraneo. L’idea della narrazione e dell’immaginario del collettivo ci interessa fino a un certo punto, Black Med è forse più un discorso comunitario. Abbiamo collaborato con altri artisti commissionando dei mix, adesso invitando a caricare brani nell’archivio online. Quello che ci interessa è che ogni volta che entriamo dentro l’archivio ci sia un grado di stupore. Anche se i pezzi li conosciamo tutti, perché non sono tanti, sono circa un migliaio ad oggi, ma ogni volta risultano nuovi perché si rimescolano e si riassemblano grazie all’algoritmo che genera il mix. L’archivio è realmente un po’ come un mare, ogni volta che ci entri dentro è sempre diverso. Non ci interessa dimostrare analogie musicali tra paesi diversi, quello che era l’obiettivo era creare un mix sempre diverso. L’algoritmo continua a mixare generando transizioni, pause diverse, più o meno pianificate e questo è per noi Black med. Durante i momenti di transizione, gli spazi di intermezzo è come se idealmente si formasse questo fantomatico suono del Mediterraneo di cui “parliamo”.

Non esiste nemmeno una narrazione geografica, né storica, ci interessa però che vada molto indietro nel tempo e il più avanti possibile nel futuro. La sua forma è sempre attiva e potenzialmente infinita.

Nella collettiva il Sogno di Antonio a Como avete presentato un tessuto, lavorando con una base scultorea nuova per la vostra pratica. Potresti dirmi di più dell’installazione?

Il lavoro è stata una commissione. L’installazione presentata nella serra della Fondazione Ratti, consisteva in un ambiente colorato con dei filtri uv e al suo interno, sui tavoli che solitamente ospitano le piante, c’erano due moduli fatti di un tessuto stampato che partiva dall’archivio di tessuti Moirè della Fondazione. Ci interessava questa tipologia di tessuto perché ha delle caratteristiche quasi-3d. A seconda di come la luce si riflette si ha una percezione diversa della texture del tessuto. Nella serra inoltre c’è un suono diffuso che consiste nella sezione Seascape dell’archivio di Black med quindi la parte più ambient/ soffusa dell’archivio.

Per il progetto Rimini Capitale Afro avete lavorato ancora con l’installazione ispirandovi al club leggendario Melodj Mecca attivo tra il 1980 e il 1990. Avete lavorato sono con installazione, scultura e suono. Potreste dirmi come siete intervenuti sul suono campionato?

Siamo in contatto con Dj Pery che era uno dei resident storici della Mecca, tra i più giovani. Per la musica e il mix lavoreremo a partire dal loro archivio di session live, isolando alcuni frammenti che poi verranno montati scadenzati come echi che riempiono l’ambiente. Mostreremo il lavoro per la prima volta alla mostra C4 che inaugura il 19 Maggio al Kunstmuseum Lichtesetin a Vaduz.

Questo porta proprio alla mia ultima domanda. Potete raccontarmi qualcosa dei vostri progetti futuri?

Attualmente abbiamo una collettiva al Macro di Roma che è dedicata a Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. Presentiamo tutti gli outtakes che avevamo realizzato durante il viaggio in macchina insieme, partendo dalla Svizzera e arrivando a Vernasca, dove Lee prese parte alle riprese del nostro film Negus con una performance nella piazza del paese. L’installazione al Macro è costituita da cinque schermi da 7 pollici con dei piccoli speaker distribuiti nello spazio. La mostra, a cura di Luca Lo Pinto, doveva essere una personale di Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, ma purtroppo è venuto a mancare lo scorso anno e Luca ha deciso di chiamare alcuni artisti e realizzare un allestimento in suo onore, siamo insieme a Rashiyah Elanga, Ishion Hutchinson, Rammellzee, Zadie Xa.

Abbiamo poi una mostra personale a Derry in Irlanda del Nord, con un focus su Black Med, sarà la prima volta che presentiamo il progetto in uno spazio espositivo “tradizionale”. Stiamo lavorando anche al libro di Black Med con Humboldt, impostato come una sorta di compendio, una raccolta di articoli e saggi di altre voci che abbiamo chiamato a dialogare con la ricerca. Abbiamo anche la mostra di cui ti parlavo prima in Liechtestein su invito di Letizia Ragaglia. Sul secondo piano del museo ogni sala sarà monografica con un focus sull’artista. Qui porteremo in realtà solo sculture con suono e luce, ed è la prima volta che non presentiamo video in una mostra così monografica. Lavoreremo sull’illuminazione del museo, intervenendo con un programma sulle luci della sala e poi ci saranno quattro grandi sculture distribuite nello spazio. Infine, abbiamo una mostra da Sismografo, a Porto che è collegata ad un ciclo di performance che faremo sempre in città.

Interview with Invernomuto

Simone Bertuzzi (1983) and Simone Trabucchi (1982) have been collaborating under the pseudonym Invernomuto since 2003. The moving image and sound are the duo’s preferred means of research, sculpture, publishing and live practice are other of its variants.

I was keen to interview you for this column, which deals with the theme of dialogue among video, sound, sculpture and installation.

Do you see a synesthesia within your work in this sense? Do you transition from one medium to another as an expression, or do you expand mainly through collaboration with other artists? Does each medium have its own peculiarities of creation? How do they dialogue together?

Invernomuto began as a duo, aspiring to be a collective. This tension towards collective work has often resulted in various forms of collaborations aiming to an expansion of the research and the imagery. In this sense, our work is always a collective vision, observing imaginaries and witnessing their evolution over time. Regarding medias, we have never had an inclination towards a mono-media approach of production. We have never been interested in working in a univocal way. Video is definitely the preferred medium, but we always adopt a mix-media approach.

We work in expanded terms, even the work is never a single corpus but always a collection of elements: a sound track, a sculpture or an olfactory installation, for instance. We therefore try to maintain an important degree of freedom in terms of formalization. The fact that we are already working in two keeps the dialogue active about everything we do.

What are your references? Can you name an artist/musician/poet you look up to?

We met in 2003 and it was a strange time in history, a whole series of subcultural experiences were ending. It was a bit of a grey period with omnivorous influences. Simone Bertuzzi came from Hip Hop and I (Trabucchi) from Punk/HC. Definitely meeting a lot of electronic music from that period in the early 2000s and going back to more classic/subtle stuff was very formative.

Everything that happened in those years was important for our formation: from abstract hip hop to the diy noise scene.

In our early years certainly having watched so much New America Cinema developed a happily experimental approach to the moving image.

Could you tell me more about your Black Med archive? Was the intention to present a multicultural index? To look for common elements between different territories and cultures? Or did you have a different research objective?

Black med is shaped precisely by the assumptions of collaboration we spoke about earlier, configuring itself as an archive in progress on the Mediterranean. The idea of collective narration and imagery interests us to a certain extent, Black Med is perhaps more of a communal discourse. We have collaborated with other artists by commissioning mixes, now by inviting them to upload tracks to the online archive. What interests us is that every time we enter the archive there is a degree of wonderment. Even though we know all the tracks, because there aren’t many of them, there are about a thousand to date, but each time they are new because they are remixed and reassembled thanks to the algorithm that generates the mix. The archive is really a bit like a sea, each time you enter it is always different. We are not interested in demonstrating musical similarities between different countries, what was the goal was to create a mix that was always different. The algorithm keeps on mixing, generating transitions, different pauses, more or less planned, and this is for us Black med. During the moments of transition, the spaces of interlude, it is as if ideally this phantom sound of the Mediterranean of which we ‘speak’ is formed.

There is no geographical or historical narrative, but we are interested in the fact that it goes far back in time and as far into the future as possible. Its form is always active and potentially infinite.

In the group show Antonio’s Dream in Como you presented a fabric, working with a sculptural base that is new to your practice.

The work was a commission. The installation presented in the greenhouse of the Ratti Foundation consisted of a colored environment with UV filters and inside, on the tables that usually house the plants, there were two modules made of a printed fabric from the Foundation’s Moirè fabric archive. We were interested in this type of fabric because it has quasi-3d characteristics. Depending on how the light reflects, you have a different perception of the texture of the fabric. In the greenhouse there is also a diffuse sound consisting of the Seascape section of the Black med archive, so the more ambient/soft part of the archive.

For the Rimini Capitale Afro project, you worked again with the installation, inspired by the legendary club Melodj Mecca, active between 1980 and 1990. The mediums in question are therefore installation, sculpture and sound. Could you tell me how you intervened on the sampled sound?

We are in contact with Dj Pery who was one of the historical residents of Mecca, among the youngest. For the music and the mix we will work from their archive of live sessions, isolating some fragments that will then be assembled on a timed basis as echoes filling the environment. We will show the work for the first time at the C4 exhibition opening on 19 May at the Kunstmuseum Lichtesetin in Vaduz.

This brings me to my last question. Can you tell me something about your future plans?

We currently have a group show at the Macro in Rome which is dedicated to Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. We are presenting all the outtakes we made on our road trip together, starting from Switzerland and ending up in Vernasca, where Lee took part in the shooting of our film Negus with a performance in the town square. The installation at the Macro consists of five 7-inch screens with small speakers distributed throughout the space. The exhibition, curated by Luca Lo Pinto, was supposed to be a solo show of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, but unfortunately, he passed away last year and Luca decided to call some artists and make an installation in his honor, we are presented together with Rashiyah Elanga, Ishion Hutchinson, Rammellzee, Zadie Xa.

We also have a solo exhibition in Derry, Northern Ireland, with a focus on Black Med, it will be the first time we present the project in a “traditional” exhibition space. We are also working on the Black Med book with Humboldt, set up as a kind of compendium, a collection of articles and essays by other voices that we have called upon to dialogue with the research. We also have the exhibition I mentioned earlier in Liechtenstein at the invitation of Letizia Ragaglia. On the second floor of the museum, each room will be monographic with a focus on the artist. Here we will actually only bring sculptures with sound and light, and it is the first time we are not presenting videos in such a monographic exhibition. We will work on the lighting of the museum, intervening with a programme on the hall lights and then there will be four large sculptures distributed in the space. Finally, we have an exhibition at Sismografo, in Porto, which is linked to a cycle of performances that we will also be doing in the city.
