Record of the week: “A Change of Nothing” by Richie Culver & Pavel Milyakov

Per Richie Culver e Pavel Milyakov chiamare il loro primo progetto collaborativo “A Change of Nothing” è un gesto sia ironicamente paradossale che risolutamente diagnostico.

Sia nel suono che nelle parole, l’EP è una risposta interiore a periodi di estrema transizione, una riflessione intricata e malinconica su quanto sia cambiato e quanto sia rimasto lo stesso. Nel caso di Culver, questa preoccupazione è stata a lungo fonte di ispirazione per l’artista. Il duro viaggio combattuto attraverso la lotta all’abuso di droghe, l’alcolismo e una vita da senza tetto rispetto ad una vita in famiglia, alla sobrietà e all’arte come fonte di vita, è sempre stata la spina dorsale del lavoro di Culver.

Il tema della transizione è ricorrente in questo album. Pensi che i cambiamenti che hai vissuto nel tuo percorso ti abbiano portato a diventare l’artista che sei oggi? Come è cambiata la tua arte parallelamente alla tua vita?

Richie: Ho sempre avuto paura del cambiamento in generale. Sono una creatura abitudinaria. Ecco perché odio le vacanze, ecc. Mi sono spesso sorpreso della mia adattabilità nelle varie circostanze della vita; e questo si rispecchia anche nel mio lavoro, essendo in grado di cambiare spesso direzione. Penso che sia un concetto valido per tutti, ci adattiamo alle circostanze. La pandemia è stato un ottimo esempio di questo.

Dici che “sei preoccupato per il futuro”. Come lo immagini, e quale credi che sia il paradosso del mondo di oggi?

Richie: Tenere a bada i miei pensieri al momento è un’abilità che non ho ancora realizzato. Questo è fondamentalmente ciò di cui parlano i testi. Probabilmente ho bisogno di meditare di più o fare più lavoro su me stesso per concentrarmi sul presente. Per quanto riguarda il futuro, davvero non so. Cerco solo di perdermi nel mio lavoro il più possibile come una distrazione da tutto il resto. Questo, ed essere un buon padre. Questa è la cosa migliore che posso fare per il mio futuro immediato. Essere un padre bravo e presente.

Anche per Milyakov, A Change of Nothing arriva durante una grave interruzione e una brusca transizione. Costretto nei primi giorni dell’invasione russa dell’Ucraina ad abbandonare la sua casa e lo studio a Mosca per trasferirsi con la moglie ucraina, Milyakov trascorre i mesi successivi viaggiando attraverso l’Europa. “[…]Avevo sempre voluto lasciare la Russia, ma l’inizio della guerra ha reso il mio soggiorno lì completamente impossibile. Condanno la guerra russa contro l’Ucraina e contro il regime russo e le sue ambizioni coloniali imperialistiche verso l’Ucraina e altri paesi vicini.”

Pavel, quale consapevolezza ritroviamo in questo album rispetto ai precedenti?

Pavel: Per me, la consapevolezza critica da sensibilizzare ora riguarda l’invasione russa dell’Ucraina e i possibili modi per aiutare gli ucraini. È essenziale che con questa versione, doniamo tutti i proventi delle vendite a “Livyj Bereh” – un gruppo di volontari di Kiev che lavora in più regioni dell’Ucraina per fornire cibo agli sfollati e riparare gli edifici distrutti dai bombardamenti russi.

Richie Culver presentò a Milyakov il progetto. La musica era come un continuum dell’arte visiva di Culver in risonanza con il produttore. “Quando scelgo artisti con cui collaborare, si tratta sempre di provare la stessa sensazione ma con approcci diversi“, dice Milyakov. “Quando mi ha mandato le registrazioni audio, riflettevano la stessa attitudine. Si può sentire lo stesso tipo di frasi, è lo stesso linguaggio che usa nei suoi dipinti.”

Richie, ti ricordi esattamente quando ti sei imbattuto per la prima volta la musica di Milyakov? Quando hai sentito che era il momento giusto per contattarlo?

Richie: Negli scorsi anni ho comprato diversi dischi di Pavel. Ero naturalmente attratto da questo mondo sonoro che è in grado di creare. Mi sembrava estraneo, avevo la sensazione di comprenderlo. L’ho contattato perché pensavo fosse la collaborazione perfetta dopo Blackhaine. È stato prima che iniziasse l’invasione russa dell’Ucraina. Abbiamo chiacchierato, e gli ho mandato alcuni dei miei pezzi. Non avevo intenzione di inviare le parti vocali in quel frangente.

Poi è iniziata l’invasione e non l’ho sentito per un po’. E’ stato in questo momento che ho approfondito molto di più la sua pratica, essendoci già un legame tra noi.

Ero a Düsseldorf per una mia mostra e una sera mi sedetti nella stanza d’albergo. Pavel mi inviò una e-mail dal nulla spiegando brevemente che doveva lasciare casa sua e dirigersi verso l’Europa con la moglie ucraina. Mi ha mandato quello su cui stava lavorando fino allo scoppio dell’invasione. Onestamente, era come se dovessimo lasciare il disco così. Ma ho mandato alcune voci come strato in più, e Pavel ci ha lavorato un po’ di più mentre era in viaggio. E questo è quanto.

L’EP presenta un lampo fugace di qualcosa che assomiglia alla speranza nel buio. Oscillando dalla rassegnazione solitaria a un distaccamento narcotico che camuffa l’incertezza paralizzante, Culver attinge da un profondo pozzo di dolore senza alcun romanticismo, comunicando la crudezza senza ira e lottando senza vergogna.

C’è oscurità e luce in questo EP, ma mai picchi di entrambi. Emozioni contrastanti si completano a vicenda. È solo una scelta stilistica, o riflette quel paradosso del mondo di oggi di cui parlavamo prima?

Pavel: I miei pezzi riflettono sempre i miei pensieri e sentimenti attuali. C’è sempre una luce presente, anche nei momenti più bui. Vedere come le persone si uniscono per aiutare le vittime dell’invasione russa dà grande speranza.

La musica e l’arte possono essere una fuga per se stessi e gli altri. Penso che sia uno degli strumenti più potenti che abbiamo. Pensi che l’arte possa ancora apportare cambiamenti significativi?

Richie: Non lo so… Forse tutta l’arte e la musica stanno peggiorando negli ultimi anni… Forse questo risponde alla domanda.

Pavel: Sono convinto che non ci sia modo di fuggire con la musica e l’arte, perché in un certo senso l’arte e la musica sono sempre politiche, e la vera arte è sempre celebrare le libertà e lottare per le libertà. Non sfuggire ai problemi, ma indicarli e combatterli. Penso che la propria arte (soprattutto se l’artista ha un grande pubblico) potrebbe essere uno strumento potente e potrebbe essere utilizzato per scopi buoni e cattivi. Come artista che ha vissuto e lavorato in Russia, mi sento responsabile per aver parlato contro il regime russo, rendendo le persone che seguono la mia arte consapevoli della mia posizione politica, e mostrando solidarietà con i miei colleghi ucraini.

Dovremmo ri-imparare ad ascoltare. Questo album sembra chiederci di fermarci un istante, di prestare attenzione alle parole e al mondo. Ci aiuta a riflettere.

Pavel: Le opere dell’artista e le opinioni politiche/sociali personali non possono esistere separatamente. Anche se usi metodi astratti nella tua arte, puoi comunque inviare il tuo messaggio al tuo pubblico utilizzando piattaforme di social media. Non puoi tacere sulle cose che accadono intorno a te. Altrimenti, è solo evasione.

Richie: È un disco pesante. Sotto tutti i punti di vista. Non c’è dubbio. Ricordo di averlo ascoltato alle 5 del mattino in una mattina nebbiosa di gennaio. Sono dovuto tornare a letto e resettare me stesso. Ma proprio come con film dell’orrore o treni fantasma, come un bambino che sta crescendo, io vivo per quelle reazioni che il mio corpo e la mia mente generano.

For Richie Culver and Pavel Milyakov to call their first collaborative project A Change of Nothing is a gesture both wryly paradoxical and unflinchingly diagnostic.

The EP marks in sound and spoken word a soul-searching response to periods of extreme transition, an intricate and melancholy reflection on how much has changed and how much has stayed the same. In Culver’s case, this preoccupation has long been a source of inspiration for the artist. The hard-fought journey from battling drug abuse, alcoholism, and homelessness to family life, sobriety and making art for a living has always been the backbone of Culver’s work, and the same applies to his recent excursions into music.

The theme of transition is recurring in this album. Do you think the changes you experienced in your path led you to become the artist you are today? So how has your art changed alongside your life?

Richie: I have always been afraid of change in general. I am a creature of habit. That’s why I hate holidays etc. This being said, I have often surprised myself with my adaptability during various circumstances in life; this also bleeds into my work, being able to change direction. I think this can be said for everyone, we adapt to circumstances. The pandemic was an excellent example of this.

You say that “you are worried about the future.” How do you see the future, and what is the paradox of today’s world?

Richie: Keeping my thoughts at the moment is a skill I have yet to accomplish. That’s basically what those lyrics are about. I probably need to meditate more or do more work on myself to keep my head in the present moment. As for the future? I really don’t know. I just try and get as lost in my work as possible as a distraction from everything else. That and be a good Father. That’s the best thing I can do for my immediate future. Be a good/present Father and try and guide conscious loving kids into the World.

For Milyakov, too, A Change of Nothing arrives during severe disruption and abrupt transition. Forced in the first days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to abandon his home and studio in Moscow to relocate with his Ukrainian wife, Milyakov spent the following months traveling through Europe. “[…]I had always wanted to leave Russia, but the start of the war made my stay there completely impossible. I condemn the Russian war against Ukraine and stand against the Russian regime and its imperialistic colonial ambitions towards Ukraine and other neighboring countries.”

What awareness do you think you have reached with this album compared to your previous ones?

Pavel: For me, the critical awareness to raise now is about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and possible ways to help Ukrainians. It is essential that with this release, we donate all the income from the sales to “Livyj Bereh” — a volunteer group from Kyiv working across multiple regions in Ukraine to supply food to those displaced and to repair buildings destroyed by Russian bombardment.

Starting life as a series of sketches, Culver reached out to Milyakov with the project, and it was the music’s continuity with Culver’s visual art resonated with the producer. “When I pick artists to collaborate with, it’s always about experiencing the same feeling but with different approaches,” says Milyakov. “When he sent me the audio recordings, they reflected the same attitude. You can hear the same kind of phrases, it’s the same language that he uses in his paintings.”

Richie, Can you exactly recall when you first encountered Milyakov’s music? When did you feel it was the right moment to reach out to him?

Richie: I had bought Pavel’s records several times over the years. It wasn’t until later that I realized I had a few of his. I was naturally drawn into this sonic world he had created. It felt foreign to me, but I understood it through feeling. I reached out to him as I thought it was the perfect next collaboration after Blackhaine. It was before the Russian invasion of Ukraine started. We chatted, and I sent him over some bits of mine, Soundscapes I had been working on; I didn’t intend on sending vocals at that point. Then the invasion started, and I didn’t hear from him for some time. It was at this point that I went much deeper into his practice as there was now a link between us (kind of)

I was in Düsseldorf for an exhibition of mine and sat in the hotel room one evening. Pavel sent an email out of the blue briefly explaining his situation of having to leave his home and head for Europe with his Ukrainian wife. He sent what he had been working on until the invasion happened. Honestly, it felt like we should leave the record like that. But I sent over some vocals as an extra layer, and Pavel worked on it some more while he was on the move. And that was that.

The EP features a fleeting flash of something resembling hope in the dark. Swinging from solitary resignation to a narcotic detachment camouflaging paralyzing uncertainty, Culver draws from a deep well of pain without any romanticism, communicating rudeness without anger and struggling without shame.

There is darkness and light on this album, but never peaks of both. Contrasting emotions complement each other. Is it just a stylistic choice, or does it reflect that paradox of today’s world that we were talking about before?

Pavel: My sound pieces always reflect my thoughts and feelings in the current moment. There is always a light present, even in the darkest times. Seeing how people unite to help the victims of the Russian invasion gives big hope.

Music and art can be an escape for yourself and others. I think that it is one of the most powerful tools we have. Do you think art can still make significant changes?

Richie: I don’t know… Maybe all the art and music is getting worse in recent years then… Perhaps that answers that question.

Pavel: I’m convinced that there is no way to escape with music and art, cause in a way, art and music are always political, and real art is always about celebrating freedoms and fighting for the freedoms. Not escaping the problems, but pointing out to them and fighting them. I think that one’s art (especially if the artist has a big audience) could be a powerful tool and could be used for good and bad purposes. As an artist who lived and worked in Russia, I feel responsible for speaking up against the Russian regime, making people who follow my art aware of my political position, and showing solidarity with my Ukrainian colleagues.

We should re-learn to listen. This album is like asking us to stop for a moment, to pay attention to the words and the world. It’s helping us to reflect.

Pavel: The artist’s works and personal political/social views cannot exist separately. Even if you use abstract methods in your art, you can still send your message to your audience using social media platforms. You can’t be silent about the things happening around you. Otherwise, it’s just escapism.

Richie: It’s a heavy record. In every way. There’s no doubt about that. I remember listening to it at like 5 am on loop on a Misty March morning. I had to go back to bed and reset myself. But just like horror films or ghost trains as a child growing up… I live for those reactions my body and mind have.

The release is accompanied by a film directed by multimedia artist Max Kreis.

All proceeds from A Change of Nothing will be donated to Livyj Bereh (linktr.ee/livyj_bereh), a volunteer group from Kyiv working across multiple regions in Ukraine to supply food to those displaced and to repair buildings destroyed by Russian bombardment.
