L’Osterfestspiele di Salzburg, una delle kermesse più prestigiose in Europa per la musica classica e l’opera, ha invitato per la prossima edizione il producer e compositore britannico Max Cooper. A dirigere l’Osterfestspiele 2024 è il Maestro Antonio Pappano, direttore d’orchestra – inglese ma di evidenti origini italiane – che ha scelto di focalizzare il tema annuale del festival attorno allo spirito e alla passione della musica del nostro paese.

Il 28 marzo, nella prestigiosa sala da concerto Felsenreitschule, Max Cooper presenterà in anteprima assoluta Seme, il suo ultimo progetto audiovisuale: proposto come “una meditazione sulla forma che ci genera e sul mondo in cui viviamo”, con una profonda prospettiva italo-centrica, Seme attinge al ricco retaggio della storia della musica italiana e della sua estetica.

In attesa di vedere la prima di Seme – che dopo la data austriaca farà tappa al leggendario Barbican di Londra il 3 aprile – abbiamo avuto l’occasione e l’onore di parlare con Max del suo ultimo progetto, che arricchisce il suo vasto repertorio di opere.

Cosa ti ha spinto a creare Seme per l’Osterfestspiele di Salisburgo e come si allinea questo progetto con la tua visione artistica complessiva?

Il punto di partenza di Seme è stata la tematica del festival scelta dal Maestro Antonio Pappano: ho iniziato a riflettere su tutte le idee e l’estetica fondamentale legate all’Italia, e ai collegamenti con i miei interessi nell’estetica delle fondamenta scientifiche, che sono stati alla base di progetti precedenti. Così ho sviluppato l’idea di Seme, con cui ho potevo creare un collegamento tra l’estetica fondamentale della scienza e quella italiana in altri settori, come l’arte, l’iconografia religiosa e l’architettura. È un crogiolo di idee e forme, e ovviamente, attinge anche all’estetica musicale italiana fondamentale: è stato un processo davvero produttivo per me , scoprendo molte forme musicali e visive meravigliose che arricchiscono il contenuto dello spettacolo.

Per Seme hai collaborato con molti altri artsti: qual è stato il loro contributo per la realizzazione del progetto?

Volevo fare riferimento alle radici classiche e operistiche del festival di Salisburgo e alla musica italiana: quindi, è stato un buon punto di partenza collaborare con una cantante d’opera – Sarah Aristidou per Salisburgo e Kim Sheehan per il Barbican – un pianista – Tom Hodge – un batterista – Kwake Bass – un violoncellista e suonatore di sintetizzatore modulare – Niels Orens.

Come per l’aspetto delle idee, la realtà è che lavorare con questi straordinari musicisti ha arricchito enormemente il processo non appena abbiamo iniziato a sperimentare. Ci sono infinite possibilità quando si tratta di fare musica, e mettere qualche paletto all’inizio spesso accelera il processo creativo. Ho anche coinvolto Architecture Social Club per l’aspetto della direzione artistica del progetto, che ha aggiunto una nuova dimensione allo spettacolo, dato che esploreremo nuove tecnologie audio-visive immersive come parte dell’esperienza dello spettacolo.

Come la tematica “italiana” del festival ha influenzato la creazione di Seme, e quali sono gli elementi estetici italiani specifici che hai esplorato?

Dopo aver trascorso del tempo studiando la musica italiana fondamentale, uno degli elementi chiave che è emerso è stata la musica di Palestrina del XVI secolo. È musica liturgica, ma ho realizzato che molti dei messaggi che trasmetteva si adattavano naturalmente a quello che cerco di comunicare con la mia musica, nonostante provenga da un contesto molto diverso. La riflessione, la bellezza e la focalizzazione sull’armonia e una sorta di rimozione ipnotica dal mondo quotidiano, si adattavano davvero bene: soprattutto dopo che avevo ritonato e rielaborato un po’ l’armonia nel mio mondo melodico. Poi, quando Kim e Sarah hanno cantato i brani, the magic happened: non vedo l’ora di quei momenti nello spettacolo. Sul lato visuale, sto lavorando con artisti incredibili: Quayola, di cui sono un estimatore da tempo, sta creando una sequenza visiva speciale basata sul suo processo di scultura moderna, portando in varie forme l’arte italiana classica nel futuro. Sto anche collaborando con Mario Carillo, che sta lavorando sulla matematica di Cardano per una sequenza geometrica italiana, mentre Yoshi Sodeoka è alle prese con la famosa sequenza di Fibonacci; Juian Uisato, da par suo, sta lavorando su forme d’arte e architettoniche italiane classiche in micro deformazioni generative. Per ognuna di queste, sto creando musica in parallelo portando il più possibile delle stesse forme e idee che posso inserire.

Infine, Architecture Social Club sta lavorando su nuovi sistemi di presentazione dello spettacolo per comunicare le idee e i sentimenti in un modo nuovo durante le performance dal vivo. C’è un enorme lavoro e sperimentazione in corso, e non so ancora dove tutto finirà, ma è sicuramente una prospettiva molto stimolante per gli spettacoli in programma.

Con un repertorio che spazia tra elettronica, opera e classica, come affronti questi generi diversi, e quali sfide o opportunità hai incontrato nel farli coesistere in Seme?

La sfida era trovare musica classica italiana che si integrasse naturalmente, e poi rielaborarla ulteriormente per fondere il tutto. I profondi sentimenti della musica liturgica si sono dimostrati perfetti, e poi hanno trovato il loro posto tra le mie tracce abituali anche alcune tonalità di Scarlatti e un brano di Verdi. Ma sarà uno spettacolo diverso da quello a cui sono abituato, data la tematica inedita e che le location sono speciali, e poi il pubblico sarà seduto. Insomma, aspettatevi un po’ del “solito”, con una grande quantità di “insolito”.

Come affronti l’integrazione dei visual nell’esibizione, e come questi migliorano l’esperienza del pubblico?

La parte musicale quella visiva raccontano due aspetti della stessa storia. La musica è ottima nel dirci direttamente come ci si sente; i visual possono mostrarci la forma e la struttura dettagliate in modo esplicito. E, insieme, possono offrire un’esperienza molto più efficace rispetto a ognuno separatamente.

Hai dato vita alla piattaforma Mesh, al fine di esplorare l’intersezione tra musica, scienza e arte. Come Seme incarna queste connessioni interdisciplinari, e quali conoscenze scientifiche e artistiche hai incorporato?

Gli aspetti scientifici di questo progetto sono i “semi” di forma estetica già presenti nei miei progetti, a cui si sono aggiunti i “semi” scientifici italiani. Ad esempio, i miei progetti passati su Simmetria, automi cellulari, onde, la distribuzione dei numeri primi: questo tipo di progetti sono tutti semi fondamentali della scienza e possono adattarsi al racconto, insieme alla Sequenza di Fibonacci, gli Anelli di Cardano, l’estetica della classica architettura italiana, l’arte religiosa; sono tutti nuovi aggiornamenti che si inseriscono nella stessa narrazione. Questo processo è ancora in corso, quindi ci sarà ancora molto da scoprire. Come sempre con i miei progetti, amo l’opportunità di imparare e scoprire nuove cose belle da aggiungere alla mia crescente collezione di musica e visual che possono essere utilizzate nei futuri spettacoli. Ogni spettacolo è una sorta di improvvisazione intorno a tutte queste idee visive e musicali, progettate specificamente per ogni pubblico e location.

A proposito di location: in che modo l’iconica sala da concerto Felsenreitschule contribuisce all’atmosfera e alla presentazione di Seme?

Non ho scelto io la Felsenreitschule come location, ma quando l’ho vista, ne sono stato entusiasta: è uno spazio spettacolare. Come di consueto, insieme a Architecture Social Club, ho cercato di capire come utilizzare lo spazio come tparte integrante dello spettacolo. La Felsenreitschule sorge su una vecchia cava, e c’è questo palco incredibile che è scolpito nella roccia: useremo sistemi di proiezione e laser personalizzati per far sì che le idee riempiano lo spazio e coinvolgano il pubblico.

Dopo la prima al Felsenreitschule, porterai Seme anche al Barbican…

Il Barbican è in assoluto uno dei miei spazi preferiti al mondo. Quella sala, e chi la dirige, sono stati centrali nel mio percorso come musicista: sia come semplice spettatore sia per quanto riguarda le esibizioni che vi ho tenuto, e le tecniche che vi ho sviluppato. È stata la prima sala in cui ho presentato il mio spettacolo 3DAV, ad esempio: ma è stato fonte di molti momenti ispiratori ascoltando la musica degli altri. Ora la nuova sfida è presentare il prossimo step nello sviluppo musicale e visivo.

Infine, come ci si sente a far parte dell’Osterfestspiele di Salisburgo, kermesse fondata da Herbert von Karajan, e quale significato ha il festival per te come artista?

Ad essere onesti, mi sento come un “DJ da cameretta” che si è infiltrato nell’eccellenza della cultura classica, e non so come andrà a finire. Ma, a parte gli scherzi, è una cosa che adoro: confido molto nelle mie capacità e sono altresì convinto che la cultura della musica elettronica sia tanto rilevante artisticamente quanto qualsiasi altra forma di musica. Amo assorbire e integrare il meglio dei diversi mondi da tutte le prospettive, e non mi preoccupano i presunti ostacoli tra diverse forme d’arte ed eventi.

The Salzburg Easter Festival, one of the most prestigious events in Europe for classical music and opera, has invited British producer and composer Max Cooper for the upcoming edition. Leading the 2024 Salzburg Easter Festival is Maestro Antonio Pappano, an orchestra conductor – English but of evident Italian origins – who has chosen to focus the festival’s annual theme around the spirit and passion of our country’s music. On March 28th, in the prestigious Felsenreitschule concert hall, Max Cooper will present the world premiere of Seme, his latest audiovisual project: described as “a meditation on the form that generates us and the world in which we live,” with a deep Italian-centric perspective, Seme draws from the rich legacy of Italian music history and its aesthetics. As we await the premiere of Seme – which after its Austrian date will stop at the legendary Barbican in London on April 3rd – we had the opportunity and honor to speak with Max about his latest project, which enriches his vast repertoire of works.

Hello Max, and welcome back to t-mag

– What motivated you to create “Seme” for the Salzburg Easter Festival, and how does it align with your overall artistic vision?

They had an Italian theme for the festival so that was the starting point. I began thinking about all of the foundational ideas and aesthetics linked to the region and the connections to my interests in the aesthetics of scientific foundations which have gone into previous projects, so I set on the idea of Seme, meaning seed, where I could link foundational aesthetics in science to Italian foundational aesthetics in other areas, art, religious iconography, architecture etc. It’s a big melting pot of ideas and forms, and of course, drawing on foundational Italian music as well. It’s been a really productive process for me so far, uncovering a lot of beautiful musical and visual forms which have been enriching my show content.

– How was the experience collaborating with diverse artists like Kim Sheehan, Sarah Aristidou, Tom Hodge, Kwake Bass and Niels Orens, and how did their contributions shape the project?

I wanted to reference the classical and operatic roots of the Salzburg festival and Italian music, so working with an opera singer (Sarah Aristidou for Salzbug and Kim Sheehan for Barbican), pianist (Tom Hodge), drummer Kwake Bass and cellist and modular synth player (Niels Orens) seemed like a good starting point. As with the ideas side, the reality was that working with these amazing musicians enriched the process hugely as soon as we started experimenting. There’s such an infinitude of possibilities when it comes to making music and art projects, setting some limitations at the start often advances the creative process more quickly. I also brought on board Archictecture Social Club on the show design and art direction side of things, which has been adding a whole new literal dimension to the show in that we will be experimenting with new immersive audio-visual technology as part of the show experience.

– How did the festival’s theme, centred around the spirit and passion of Italy, influence the creation of “Seme,” and what specific Italian aesthetic elements did you explore?

After spending time with foundational Italian music, one of the key elements that emerged was the music of Palestrina from the 1500’s. It’s worship music, but I realised a lot of the messages it was designed to convey were a natural fit with those that I try to convey with my own music despite it coming from a very different place. The reflection and beauty and focus on harmony and sort of hypnotic removal from the everyday world, it really fit, especially after I had retuned and reworked the harmony a little into my melodic world. Then when Kim and Sarah sang the pieces, the magic happened, I’m really looking forward to those parts of the show. On the visual side I’ve been working with some amazing artists, Quayola, who I have been a long time fan of, is creating a special visual sequence around his modern sculpture process, taking a classical Italian art into the future in many ways. I’m also working with Mario Carillo is working with the mathematics of Cardano for an Italian geometric sequence, Yoshi Sodeoka is working with the famous Fibonacci sequence, and Juian Uisato is working with classic Italian art and archictural forms into generative micro mangles. For each one of these I’m creating music in parallel carrying as much of the same forms and ideas I can get in there, and finally Archictecture Social Club are working on new show delivery systems to communicate the ideas and feelings in a new way for the live performances. There’s a huge amount of work and experimentation happening, and I don’t even know where it’s all going to end up yet, but it’s certainly an exciting prospect for the shows.

-With a repertoire spanning electronic, opera, and classical, how do you navigate these diverse genres, and what challenges or opportunities did you encounter in blending them in “Seme”?

The challenge was to find classic Italian music that was a natural fit, and then to rework it further to fully integrate. The deep feelings of worship music proved to be a good fit, and then some keys from Scarlatti and a banger from Verdi, they all found their place amongst my usual track list. But it will be a different sort of show from my normal, given it’s all seated and in these special spaces and with a new theme, expect some of the usual with a large amount of the unusual.

– With collaborations from design studios, how do you approach integrating visuals into your performances, and how do they enhance the audience’s experience?

The music and visual tell two aspects of the same story. Music is great at telling us directly how it feels. Visuals can show us the detailed form and structure explicitly, and the two together can deliver a far more powerful experience than either alone.

– Interdisciplinary Connections: Given your founding of Mesh to explore music, science, and art, how does “Seme” embody these interdisciplinary connections, and what insights from science and art did you incorporate?

The scientific angles for this project are the seeds of aesthetic form already running though my projects, and the Italian scientific seeds added to the mix. So for example, my past projects on Symmetry, cellular automata, waves, the distribution of the primes, these sorts of projects are all foundational seeds of science and can fit the narrative, along with the Fibonacci Sequence, Cardano Circles, the aesthetics of classic Italian architecture, religious art, these are all new additions which fit into the same narrative. This process is still ongoing so there will be plenty more to find. As always with my projects I love the opportunity to learn and find new beautiful things to add to my ever growing collection of music and visuals which can go into future shows. Every show is some sort of improvisation around all of these visual and musical ideas, designed specifically for each audience and location.

– How does the iconic Felsenreitschule concert hall contribute to the atmosphere and presentation of “Seme,” and what factors influenced your choice of this venue?

I didn’t choose the venue but I was certainly happy to see it when I did, it’s a spectacular space. As always, my job, along with Architecture Social Club, is to figure out how to use the space as a canvas and feature of the show as much as the content. We have that amazing carved from rock stage which I hope we can project onto to make the architecture feature, and we will be using custom projection and laser systems to make the ideas fill the space and immerse the audience.

– What can audiences expect from the UK debut at the Barbican, and are there specific elements or surprises you’re excited to share?

The Barbican is one of my favourite spaces in the world. That hall and the people who run it, who play there, and who visit, have been so central to my journey as a musician through shows visited, shows played, and techniques developed. It was the first room I did my 3DAV show, for example, and the space of many inspiring moments as a visitor to hear others music there. So now the job is how to build on all of that and present the next step in musical and visual development.

– Significance of Salzburg Festival: How does it feel to be part of the Salzburg Easter Festival, founded by Herbert von Karajan, and what personal significance does the festival hold for you as an artist?

To be honest, for me, it feels like a bedroom DJ has smuggled themselves into high classical culture and who knows what will happen. But I love that, I’m confident in my craft and confident that electronic music culture is as rich with art as any other form of music. I love to absorb and integrate the best of different worlds from all sides and not worry about previously perceived barriers between art forms and events.
