Fil Rouge: the fashion highlights of 2022

Con la fine del 2022 è doveroso stilare quello che nel gergo della moda sarebbe chiamato un “recap” di tutti gli eventi più importanti di quest’anno, il primo vissuto con un ritorno alla quasi normalità dopo due anni segnati dalla pandemia.

Abbiamo selezionato 9 avvenimenti del 2022 che ci hanno portato in qualche modo a riflettere, non solo sul futuro di questo settore ma anche sul continuo emergere del passato all’interno del nostro presente: è qui che arriva l’eco di Nietzsche con il suo eterno ritorno, che mai come adesso sembra attuale, quasi reale.

Alessandro Michele che lascia Gucci, dopo aver creato un’estetica che ha romanticizzato le storie, i volti, gli abiti di altri tempi portandoli in una dimensione futuristica; Raf Simons che chiude il suo brand dopo 27 anni, forse per passare alla direzione creativa in solitaria di Prada. Coperni con il suo “spray dress” vuole dimostrare come moda e tecnologia siano ormai sposate da tempo, ma anche il fondatore di Patagonia che devolve le azioni della sua azienda a un’organizzazione no-profit finalizzata alla salvaguardia dell’ambiente.

La nascita dell’edizione di Harper’s Bazaar Italia rappresenta un segno di resistenza, con un giornale che punta tutto su una nuova valorizzazione della carta, sia come fonte di ispirazione sia come oggetto privilegiato, da toccare, guardare, odorare, amare, ed è sempre un cartaceo, British Vogue, a segnare il ritorno di Linda Evangelista nel mondo della moda dopo 15 anni di assenza dovuti a un intervento che l’ha sfigurata.

Il debutto di Marco de Vincenzo è stato sicuramente un’altro punto di cui si è parlato molto, soprattutto per il suo approccio diverso dagli altri, non basato su uno studio matto e disperatissimo dell’heritage ma sulla volontà reale e bellissima di esprimere il proprio concetto di moda; anno di rebranding per marchi storici del Made in Italy come Trussardi e Balestra ma anche di voci internazionali come Hugo Boss.

Chiudiamo e piangiamo la morte di Issey Miyake: con lui se ne va un pezzo di Storia, che però avremo sempre modo di ricordare tramite le sue splendide creazioni.

Alessandro Michele lascia Gucci

Dopo quasi otto anni passati alla guida di Gucci, Alessandro Michele volta pagina, lasciando dietro di sé un’eredità artistica difficile da eguagliare. La sua idea di moda, incentrata su un costante dialogo tra un passato barocco, romantico, malinconico e la voglia di entrare in un futuro gender fluid e inclusivo, è diventata in brevissimo tempo riconoscibile in tutto il mondo, rendendo de facto Michele il designer più amato degli ultimi anni. Alla base della decisione operata da Kering, società che detiene il marchio Gucci, vi è sicuramente l’abbassamento delle performance di vendita della Maison; dal punto di vista creativo è invece verosimile credere che l’estetica di Michele fosse diventata più forte dell’identità di Gucci, costringendo il brand a prendere una decisione dolorosa ma necessaria. Del resto non è la prima volta che Kering sostituisce i direttori creativi a sorpresa, spesso con risultati vincenti: basti pensare a Tom Ford nel ’94 o al recentissimo cambio di Bottega Veneta, che ha visto il braccio destro di Daniel Lee, Matthieu Blazy, diventare Creative Director con successo.

Bella Hadid: lo “spray dress” di Coperni

Il premio di video con più visualizzazione dell’intera fashion week va a Coperni, che alla fine della sfilata SS23 ha fatto sfilare un’eterea Bella Hadid nuda in passerella, salvo poi spruzzarle addosso uno spray composto da fibre sospese in una soluzione di polimeri che evapora a contatto con le superfici: in pochi minuti la vernice si è trasformata in un abito vero e proprio, con cui è terminato lo show. Oltre alla citazione esplicita alla primavera/estate del ’99 di McQueen, il messaggio di Coperni risiede nell’identità del brand, basata sull’esplorazione del rapporto tra la moda e la tecnologia. I due designer, Sébastien Meyer e Arnaud Vaillant, si sono infatti posti l’obiettivo di aprire un dialogo, di stimolare il loro pubblico, di spingere gli osservatori in modo attivo verso il futuro, proprio come fece Niccolò Copernico, a cui il marchio si è ispirato per il suo nome, quando sfidando l’intero sistema riuscì a dimostrare la veridicità della teoria eliocentrica.

La nascita di Harper’s Bazaar Italia

Il 5 Dicembre ha debuttato l’edizione italiana del giornale di moda più antico del mondo, Harper’s Bazaar. In tempi come questi, dove alla parola “cartaceo” viene sempre abbinata quella di “crisi”, la nascita di un periodico di questo tipo rappresenta quasi un simbolo di resistenza, una sorta di invito indirizzato a chi i giornali non li compra, non li sfoglia, non li odora più. La direzione è stata affidata a Dasha Veledeeva, che per quindici anni è stata al timone dell’edizione russa; Sissy Vian sarà Creative Fashion Director, mentre Marc Ascoli è stato nominato Executive Creative Director. La distribuzione del giornale non avverrà in maniera tradizionale: difatti, oltre alle edicole, sarò possibile acquistare il giornale in hotel di lusso, centri benessere, teatri, musei, boutique e gallerie d’arte, per avvicinare il prodotto ai suoi lettori/consumatori reali, proprio nell’ottica di evidenziare e celebrare la bellezza di poter toccare con gli occhi, le mani, il naso e il tatto il nuovo mondo proposto da Harper’s Bazaar Italia.

Operazione rebranding: Trussardi, Balestra, Hugo Boss

Con il termine rebranding si intende una strategia aziendale finalizzata a rendere un brand di nuovo al passo con i tempi e, soprattutto, più vicino alle nuove generazioni: è il caso di Trussardi, Balestra e Boss, che a partire dai loro loghi hanno invertito la rotta del marchio. Trussardi, con la direzione creativa di Benjamin A. Huseby e Serhat Işık (già Creative Director e fondatori del brand GMBH), ha visto l’iconico levriero evolversi e diventare un elemento circolare, molto più grafico, a cui è seguita una collezione di debutto ispirata al guardaroba dei milanesi, con forme fluide e palette dai colori neutri assolutamente in grado di fare tendenza. Balestra ha avviato l’operazione “reload”: la gestione è ora tutta a femminile, affidata alle figlie e alla nipote del fondatore, che hanno subito ripreso il logo originario del 1971 tingendolo con l’iconico “blu Balestra”, a cui è seguita la prima collezione prêt-à-porter che racconta una donna contemporanea che però non dimentica i dettagli del lusso sartoriale. Hugo Boss ha creato due brand indipendenti all’interno della stessa azienda, che coesistono armoniosamente e parlano a due generazioni diverse: BOSS è pensato per i millenials, e racconta l’audacia e la fiducia in se stessi, con testimonial come Matteo Berrettini e Khaby Lame, mentre HUGO parla alla Gen Z, celebrandone la capacità di essere ribelli e anticonformisti, con brand ambassadors come la modella sudanese Adut Akech, il rapper Big Matthew e SAINt JHN e la ballerina americana Maddie Ziegler.

Il debutto di Marco de Vincenzo a Etro

La SS23 ha segnato il debutto di Marco de Vincenzo alla direzione creativa di Etro, con un passaggio di testimone storico, dato che fino ad oggi sono stati sempre membri della famiglia a disegnare le collezioni. De Vincenzo ha scelto di non lasciarsi influenzare in maniera eccessiva dall’heritage del marchio, portando in passerella una collezione con un linguaggio metropolitano e femminile, con silhouette strutturate e quattro nuove borse realizzate con la tecnica dell’upcycling. Il risultato una collezione dove il suo tocco è evidente: la camicia, pezzo cult di Etro, diventa un mini dress stretto ai fianchi da minigonne stampate; il paisley, simbolo del brand, viene sostituito dai frutti del Mediterraneo; i colori naturali di Etro lasciano il posto ai degradè a contrasto; micro top e gonne tubo full color vengono impreziosite da frange grafiche.

E’ proprio come De Vincenzo stesso ha dichiarato: «Un viaggio di pura gioia per un nuovo inizio».

Patagonia cede le sue azioni a un’organizzazione no-profit per salvaguardare il pianeta

“Oggi il nostro unico azionista è il pianeta terra”, queste le parole di Yvon Chouinard, fondatore di Patagonia, che ha ceduto le azioni del marchio, valutate circa 3 miliardi di dollari, a un’organizzazione no-profit per la salvaguardia della Terra. Per capire le ragioni di questo gesto bisogna andare indietro nel tempo, a quando il giovane Chouinard si diverte a surfare e scalare montagne, inventando per primo i chiodi di acciaio da arrampicata che non danneggino la montagna. Nel 1973 fonda Patagonia, che diventa ben presto leader nel settore grazie all’utilizzo del cotone organico; nel 1985 Chouinard decide di devolvere l’1% delle vendite alla tutela e al ripristino dell’ambiente naturale; nel 2002 fonda un’organizzazione no-profit “1% for the Planet” per incoraggiare anche le altre aziende a seguire il suo progetto. Arriviamo così al 2022, anno in cui Chouinard prende la storica decisione di trasferire il 98% delle quote della sua azienda alla Terra: la nostra speranza è che sia d’esempio ai tanti, troppi marchi ancora ben lontani dalla reale voglia di tutelare il nostro pianeta.

Raf Simons chiude il suo brand

Per ben 27 anni Raf Simons ha portato in passerella la sua personalissima idea di moda maschile, legata alla cultura pop giovanile e al suo sempiterno amore per la musica punk, l’arte contemporanea e il mondo underground, senza dimenticare le collaborazioni dall’accento street, come quelle con Adidas e Eastpak. Il suo percorso è terminato con la primavera/estate 2023, che ha sfilato a Milano questo Ottobre: Simons ha pubblicato un post sui suoi canali, in cui ha ringraziato il suo team, i collaboratori, gli amici, i familiari e tutti coloro che hanno creduto nella sua visione e nel suo progetto. Questa notizia giunta all’improvviso apre una finestra su un’altra possibilità, che vedrebbe Miuccia Prada andare in pensione e lasciare il controllo della direzione creativa a Simons, attualmente co-direttore. Per ora nessuna conferma ufficiale ma, ça va sans dire, restiamo in attesa di un annuncio che sarebbe accolto in maniera estremamente positiva da tutti gli addetti al settore.

Il ritorno di Linda Evangelista in passerella dopo quindici anni

Linda Evangelista ha scelto un’occasione speciale per tornare sulle passerella dopo una lunga assenza durata quindici anni, ovvero il 25° compleanno della Baguette di Fendi, celebrato dalla Maison con una sfilata che ha dato il via allo fashion week di New York. La supermodella, tra i volti più famosi degli anni ’90, è uscita allo scoperto quest’anno dichiarando pubblicamente di aver subito un intervento di criolipolisi, che riduce in modo non invasivo il grasso corporeo con il raffreddamento cutaneo localizzato, purtroppo non andato a buon fine, che ha sfigurato il suo celebre volto. Dopo cinque anni di silenzio, la Evangelista ha deciso di smettere di nascondersi, iniziando dalla copertina di British Vogue: agli scatti dell’amico Steven Meisel il compito di raccontare questa seconda difficile parte della sua vita.

La morte di Issey Miyake

Lo scorso 5 Agosto a Tokyo si è spento Issey Miyake, considerato universalmente uno dei designer più rivoluzionari della moda contemporanea. Lo stilista, sopravvissuto allo scoppio della bomba di Hiroshima, è stato un pioniere della sperimentazione tra moda e tecnologia, culminata nella creazione della sua cifra stilistica di maggior successo, ovvero l’utilizzo di un innovativo tessuto plissè impresso a caldo che ha dato vita all’iconica borsa Bao Bao. Miyake è stato inoltre uno dei primi stilisti a proporre un’estetica genderless in tempi non sospetti, e la sua figura è stata fondamentale nell’aprire le porte della moda giapponese in Europa: la sua prima sfilata a Parigi risale al lontano 1972. Miyake ha sempre sentito l’esigenza di continuare a sperimentare, non per una spinta di carattere commerciale quanto piuttosto per un’esigenza personale, che lo ha portato a lasciare relativamente presto la direzione creativa del brand, del quale ha sempre mantenuto la presidenza. Citiamo una delle sue frasi più celebri: “Il design non è per la filosofia. È per la vita”. E siamo felici di sapere che ha passato gli ultimi anni vivendo per la ricerca, riuscendo a mantenere fede a queste parole.

As 2022 comes to and end, it becomes necessary to make a list that, within fashion world, would be called a “recap” of the most significant events of the year, the first one that we had really experienced since after two years marked by the pandemic situation.

We have chosen 9 events happened in 2022 that somehow brought us to reflect, not only about the future of the fashion system but also about the continuous existence of the present time within the past: in this way we can see Nietzsche’s echo coming in with his eternal return, which never seems as relevant as now, almost real.

Starting from the departure of Alessandro Michele made by Gucci, who has created an aesthetic able to romanticise stories, faces and clothing belonging to baroque carrying them into a futuristic dimension; we go on with Raf Simons closing his own company after 27 years, perhaps in order to move on a solo journey through the creative direction of Prada. Coperni and his “spray dress”, that represents the synergy between fashion and technology, but also Patagonia’s founder who donates his company’s shares to a non-profit organisation aimed at safeguarding the environment.

The birth of Harper’s Bazaar Italia represents a sign of resistance, with a magazine that sets its goal on a new enhancement of paper, considered both a source of inspiration and an artistic object, that need to be touched, looked, smelled and loved again, as a paper magazine requires. It’s always a paper magazine, British Vogue, that marks the return of Linda Evangelista into the fashion world after 15 years of absence due a surgery that disfigured her.

Marco de Vincenzo’s debut at creative director of Etro is definitely another point that has been discussed by all the fashion world, especially for his approach, which is not based on a in-depth study of the maison’s heritage but on a genuinely desire of expressing his own fashion’s idea. 2022 has been also the year of rebranding, with Made in Italy brands such as Trussardi and Balestra, followed by international voices such as Hugo Boss. We close our list grieving the death of Issey Miyake, one the of the most iconic fashion designer of our age, that we will remember through his magnificent creations.

Alessandro Michele leaves Gucci After almost eight years being in charge for the creative direction of Gucci, Alessandro Michele is starting over a new chapter, leaving behind himself an an unique artistic heritage hard to march. His concept of fashion, based on a constant dialogue between a baroque, romantic, melancholic past and the desire to getting it to a gender fluid and inclusive future, has become recognisable all over the world in a very short time, making Michele the most beloved designer of the latest years. At the basis of the decision made by Kering, the company that own the Gucci brand, there’s undoubtedly the lowering of the Maison’s sales performance; from a creative perspective, on the other hand, it’s most likely to believe that Michele’s identity had become stronger than Gucci’s one, forcing the brand to make a painful but necessary decision. Moreover, this is not the first time that Kering chooses to replace creative directors by surprise, most of the tie with successful results: just thinking about Tom Ford in ’94 or the very recent change of the direction at Bottega Veneta, with Daniel Lee’s right-hand man Matthieu Blazy becoming in charge in its place successfully.

Bella Hadid: Coperni’s ‘spray dress

The winner of the most viewed video of the entire fashion week goes to Coperni, that at the very end of the SS23 fashion show put an ethereal Bella Hadid naked on the catwalk, had her all cover up with a spray composed of suspended fibres in a polymer solution that evaporates on contact with surfaces: in a few minutes the paint has been transformed into a real dress, signing the end of the show. Beside the obvious quote of McQueen’s Spring/Summer ’99, Coperni’s message lies deeply into the brand’s identity, based on the exploration of the relationship between fashion and technology. The two designers indeed, Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, are constantly attempting to start a dialogue with their audience, bringing them towards the future, acting like the figure that inspired the brand’s name, Niccolò Copernicus, when facing the entire system managed to demonstrate the heliocentric theory.

The birth of Harper’s Bazaar Italia

On December 5th the first ever issue of Harper’s Bazaar Italia was born: in times like this, where the word “paper” is always paired with the word “crisis”, the birth of new paper magazine becomes a symbol of resistance, an open invitation addressed to those who no longer buy newspapers, neither flip through the pages or smell them. Dasha Veledeeva, after fifteen years in charge in the Russian edition, has been appointed director; Sissy Vian will be Creative Fashion Direction while Marc Ascoli will play the role of Executive Creative Director. The magazine will not be sold only in the newsstands but also in luxury hotels, wellness centres, theatres, museums, boutiques and art galleries, in order to bring the product closer to its real readers/consumers, with the aim of point put the beauty of being able to touch the new world carried on by Harper’s Bazaar Italia with all the five senses.

Operation rebranding: Trussardi, Balestra, Hugo Boss

The term “rebranding” refers to a corporate strategy aimed at making a brand up-to-date again, rethinking the communication’s line in order to get closer to the new generations: this is the case of Trussardi, Balestra and Boss, that have made a clear change of direction, starting from their logos. Trussardi, now directed by of Benjamin A. Huseby and Serhat Işık (former Creative Directors and founders of the GMBH brand), decided to evolve the iconic greyhound into a circular and graphic shape, followed by the first fashion debut during the FW22, where the designers took inspirations from the Milanese’s wardrobes, with fluid shapes and neutral color palettes, with the result of a trendsetter collection. Balestra launched operation “reload”: the House, now leaded by the founder’s daughters and granddaughter’s, decide to renovate the original logo from 1971, making it more linear as font and coloured in the iconic “Balestra blue”. The logo’s change has been followed by a collection that tells the story of a contemporary woman who does not forget the details behind a tailor-made creation. Hugo Boss has split his identity into two different brands that need to speak to different generations. BOSS is designed for millennials, with testimonials as Matteo Berrettini and Khaby Lame, who incourage audacity and self-confidence, while HUGO is gen z inspired, with brand ambassadors such as Sudanese model Adut Akech, rappers Big Matthew and SAINt JHN and the American dancer Maddie Ziegler, that all together deliver a message against the conformism and the rules.

Marco de Vincenzo’s debut at Etro

SS23 marked Marco de Vincenzo’s debut as Etro’s creative director, an historical moment since from the beginning of the brand we could see only family members leading it. De Vincenzo’s approach is remarkable especially because he decided to not study deeply Etro’s heritage, creating a fashion show that speaks for both the parts, the brand and the designer. The result is a collection where De Vincenzo’s touch become clear: the shirt, one of the Etro’s cult pieces, becomes a mini-dress tightened at the hips by a printed mini-skirt; the paisley, symbol of the brand, is replaced by Mediterannean fruits; Etro’s natural colours palette are replaced by contrasting degradè colours, while micro tops and full-color pencil skirts are embellished with graphic fringes. As De Vincenzo himself declared: “A journey of pure joy for a new beginning”.

Patagonia sells its shares to a non-profit organisation to safeguard the planet

“Earth is now our only shareholder”, these are the words of Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, who has sold his own brand’s shares, valued more than $3 billion, to a non-profit organisation whose goal is to preserve our planet.

In order to understand all the reasons behind this decision we need to go back to the origins of the myth, when Chouinard was a young boy who enjoyed surfing and climbing mountains, becoming the first inventor of a kind of pitons that would not cause any damage to the mountains. In 1973 he founded Patagonia, which soon became a market leader thanks to its use of organic cotton; in 1985 Chouinard decided to give the 1% of his sales for the saving of the natural environment; in 2002 he founded a non-profit organisation “1% for the planet” in order to encourage other companies to follow his project. In 2022 Chouinard makes the most historical decision ever, transferring 98% of his company’s shares to the Earth: we are strongly hoping that this will be the first of many others, especially because too many brands are still too far from truly protecting our planet.

Raf Simons closes his brand

For 27 years Raf Simons brought to the catwalk his very personal idea of men’s fashion, inspired by the youth pop culture and his deeply love for punk music, contemporary art and the underground world, without forgetting special collaborations with streets brands such as Adidas and Eastpak. His journey ended with the spring/summer 2023 fashion show in Milan: Simons posted some words on his social channels, saying that he wants to deeply thanks his team, friends, family and all the people who believed in his vision. This breaking out news gives birth to another possibility, which would see Miuccia Prada retire and Simons becoming the only fashion director of Prada. We still don’t have any confirmations but, ça va sans dire, we are waiting an announcement that would have the most pleasant welcome by all the fashion system.

Linda Evangelista returns to the catwalk after fifteen years

Linda Evangelista chose a special occasion to come back to the catwalk after a long absence of fifteen years, that happened to be the 25th birthday of Fendi’s Baguette, celebrated by the Maison with a fashion show that kicked off New York Fashion Week. The supermodel, which is considered quite a legend of the 90’s, came into light this year declaring that she undergone on a cryolipolysis, an aesthetic operation which reduces body fat by cooling down local areas of the body, with a tragic result, that compromised her beauty forever. After five years of silence, Evangelista decided to stop hiding, starting with the cover of British Bogue: she gave the opportunity and job of telling his story to his forever friend and legend Steven Meisel.

The death of Issey Miyake

On August 5th Issey Miyake, universally acknowledged as one of the most revolutionary voices of contemporary fashion, passed away in Tokyo. The designer, who survived Hiroshima bomb blast, has been a pioneer for what we can call experiementation between fashion and technology, culminating in the creation of his most successful signatures, the Bao Bao bag, composed by an innovative heat-embossed pleated fabric. Miyake is also know for being one of the first designers to suggest a genderless vision and aesthetic in his collections, and he was also the very first Japanese designer who understood how to open the gates of the European fashion to his successors: we can indeed mark his first show in Paris back in 1972. Miyake has always felt that he would need to pursue the experimentation, not on a commercial basis but for a personal need, which led him to leave the creative direction of his brand early in time, even if he remained former president until his death. We want to quote one of his most famous sentences: “Design is not for philosophy. It is for life”. And we are deeply touched, happy because we know that he genuinely spent his last years living the life he always wanted, keeping faith to his true words and desires.
