“Scope neglect” è l’ultimo album di Ben Frost che nel tempo è diventato tra i massimi esponenti della musica elettronica e sperimentale. Trasferito in Islanda ha collaborato con molti artisti, tra tutti Bjork e Fennetzs. Fin qui tutto normale e, perché no, anche ordinario.

Ma Ben Frost, a distanza di sette anni da The centre cannot Hold, torna abbattendo la quarta parete come se fossimo in un teatro, accordando al suono la possibilità di rispecchiare l’altro e l’oltre in una percezione dinamica, impaziente, dirompente in un movimento di rottura e frammentato.

Un ritorno che aspira ad una condizione che va al di là dell’arte stessa, che si colloca in un immaginario set cinematografico che si amplia e si srotola lungo una sceneggiatura circolare fatta di sovrapposizioni di incontri di uno stesso io che dialoga con se stesso sulle ragioni di un mondo che cambia; un gioco metamorfico, veloce, accelerato che si nutre di una sostanza oscura, di contrasti, di vuoti percettibili e di pieni invisibili.

Un ascolto spossante che invoca sentimenti estremi; un’umanità che si incontra/scontra con l’irrequietezza indomita di un mondo offuscato da obliterazioni e negligenze.

Un album che delira senza mai placarsi, che esprime il disagio di una società che asseconda la nefandezza culturale, svuotata, attorcigliata al nulla, persa in un paesaggio arido, chiuso, in una stanza maleodorante.

Una condizione che si insidia in silenzi che non assolvono, che scuotono e si trasformano in giudici giudicanti che non ammettono difesa alcuna.

“Scope neglect” è un disco politico, uno sguardo impietoso verso un mondo malato di un male irreversibile. Un disco che non abbassa mai i toni ma rincalza attraverso l’impulsività di un metal profondo, stressante che riempie un “silenzio” censore.

Si avvertono – Ben Frost lo ha già fatto in passato con “Sleeping beauty” e “In Her Skin” – le collaborazioni sonore destinate a sostenere le filmografie cinematografiche; intervengono sfumature erotiche e horror come nelle narrative filmiche precedenti, ma anche collaborazioni televisive e seriali. Una distanza progettuale che non rinnega un’identità ma rafforza il calibro artistico del genere consentendo di approfondire, elevare, stimolare un esercizio di cui solo la musica è capace.

Un coinvolgimento totale che centra zone d’interesse del 2024: questa l’eccezionalità del lavoro di Ben Frost!

8 brani da considerare l’uno dentro l’altro in è un gioco di specchi dove il primo si flette nell’ultimo e così via quasi a creare una scatola cinese che man mano cresce fino a raddoppiarsi.

Uno specchio che si rompe interpretando una violenza emotiva e determinando un suono incisivo con sofisticati elementi acustici che confondono la registrazione in studio con una live confezionato dal lavoro di produzione di Christian Wright.

“Scope Negletc” è un concept orrorifico, un thriller psicologico, non a caso, che mantiene la rete di una follia sublime nell’incoerenza di un genere che sboccia attraverso un altro, spesso opposto, consentendo di tessere un disco equilibrato e geniale, battendo una scrittura fatta di attesa e suspence quasi alla Bret Easton Ellis. Un tempo frammentato, come fosse un montaggio che fa coincidere movimento e voce, sovrapponendoli fino a completo assorbimento e all’inaspettata, improvvisa sparizione.

“Scope neglect” is the latest album by Ben Frost, who over time has become one of the leading exponents of electronic and experimental music. Having moved to Iceland, he has collaborated with many artists, among them Bjork and Fennetzs. So far so normal and, why not, even ordinary.

But Ben Frost, seven years after The centre cannot Hold, returns by breaking down the fourth wall as if we were in a theatre, granting sound the possibility of reflecting the other and the beyond in a dynamic, impatient, disruptive perception in a breaking and fragmented movement.

A return that aspires to a condition that goes beyond art itself, set in an imaginary film set that expands and unrolls along a circular script made up of overlapping encounters of the same self that dialogues with itself on the reasons for a changing world; a metamorphic, fast, accelerated game that feeds on an obscure substance, on contrasts, on perceptible voids and invisible fullnesses.

An exhausting listening that invokes extreme feelings; a humanity that meets/clashes with the untamed restlessness of a world clouded by obliterations and negligence.

An album that rages without ever subsiding, expressing the unease of a society that panders to cultural nefariousness, emptied, twisted into nothingness, lost in an arid, closed landscape, in a malodorous room.

A condition that lurks in silences that do not absolve, that shake and turn into judging judges that admit no defence.

“Scope neglect” is a political record, a merciless look at a world sick with an irreversible evil. A record that never lowers the tone but rather raises it through the impulsiveness of deep, stressful metal that fills a censorious ‘silence’.

One senses – Ben Frost has already done this in the past with ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and ‘In Her Skin’ – sound collaborations intended to support filmographies; erotic and horror nuances intervene, as in previous film narratives, but also television and serial collaborations. A design distance that does not deny an identity but reinforces the artistic calibre of the genre, allowing it to deepen, elevate, stimulate an exercise of which only music is capable.

A total involvement that hits areas of interest in 2024: this is the exceptionality of Ben Frost’s work!

8 tracks to be considered one inside the other in is a game of mirrors where the first one flexes into the last and so on almost creating a Chinese box that gradually grows until it doubles.

A mirror that shatters interpreting emotional violence and resulting in an incisive sound with sophisticated acoustic elements that confuse a studio recording with a live one packaged by Christian Wright’s production work.

“Scope Negletc” is a horror concept, a psychological thriller, not surprisingly, that maintains the web of sublime madness in the incoherence of one genre that blossoms through another, often opposite, allowing a balanced and ingenious record to be woven, beating out a writing made of anticipation and suspense almost as Bret Easton Ellis. A fragmented time, as if it were a montage that makes movement and voice coincide, overlapping them until they are completely absorbed and unexpectedly, suddenly disappear.
