10 Fashion Film – you need to know

La moda ha sempre avuto la capacità di attirare a sé in modo naturale e magnetico tutti gli altri tipi di arte, creando sinergie in grado di far nascere nuovi mondi e nuove idee: è il caso dei fashion film, piccoli cortometraggi che in pochi minuti raccontano un immaginario dove la moda si mette al servizio del cinema e il cinema della moda.

I fashion film, a volte firmati da registi di fama internazionale, altre dagli stessi stilisti, danno la possibilità agli spettatori di captare una sensazione, una suggestione, un’atmosfera in pochissimi frames. Di seguito un personalissimo elenco di 10 fashion film che vale la pena vedere e rivedere ancora.

PRADA – “THE POSTMAN DREAMS” BY AUTUMN DE WILDE (2015)

La serie di fashion film a episodi The Postman Dreams ruota attorno alle consegne oniriche e fantasiose di un postino, il quale si imbatte in personaggi usciti da una dimensione senza tempo che lo sorprendono facendolo diventare spettatore di pochi ma significativi minuti della loro vita. Durante le sue avventure a cavallo di improbabili mezzi di trasporto, il postino incontra ora una vecchia signora che passa le sue giornate nella lavanderia automatica, ora una ragazza che colpisce un albero da cui cadono borse Prada, ora dei bambini che preparano una guerra combattuta a suon di giocattoli in una trincea ricostruita all’interno della Galleria bag, il tutto con una colonna sonora folk suonata da The Blasting Company e un’estetica divertente e fuori dal tempo che rende lo spettatore parte dell’irraggiungibile mondo Prada.

H&M – “COME TOGETHER” BY WES ANDERSON (2016)

In questi 3 minuti e 52 secondi Wes Anderson è riuscito a condensare tutti gli elementi e i temi che fanno parte della sua poetica. Il corto è ambientato la notte di Natale a bordo di un treno dell’immaginaria H&M Lines; il capotreno, che altri non poteva essere che Adrien Brody, annuncia con dolore ai passeggeri che a causa di un enorme ritardo non riusciranno a trascorrere la mezzanotte con i loro cari, offrendosi però di servire un brunch natalizio all’interno del vagone ristorante. Da qui inizia la minuziosa indagine estetica e introspettiva tipica di Wes Anderson, che muove la sua telecamera voyeuristica di finestrino in finestrino per farci vedere le manie, le paturnie, le piccole nevrosi di ogni passeggero. Nella scena finale, sulle note di Happy Xmas – War is over di John Lennon, tutti i personaggi si ritrovano a condividere insieme il senso del Natale.

KENZO – “CABIRIA, CHARITY, CHASTITY” BY NATASHA LYONNE (2017)

Una linea surreale e onirica che unisce l’immaginario di Kenzo e quello di Fellini, con l’attrice americana Maya Rudolph (ndr. presenza fissa del Saturday Night Live) che diventa una moderna Giulietta Masina alla ricerca di se stessa. Il corto ruota attorno al passato della protagonista, cresciuta all’interno di un teatro vaudevilliano, e a tutti i personaggi di questo mondo a tratti crudele a tratti meraviglioso che ha delineato il suo percorso di vita. Gli abiti sono decostruiti, esagerati, bizzarri; le scene si susseguono tra lezioni per diventare clown, spettacoli con marionette inquietanti, balli sfrenati, discorsi ossessivi e ripetuti, momenti di intimità e di spettacolo, in un flusso di coscienza visivo senza soluzione di continuità. Resta costante la capacità degli abiti di Kenzo di essere ora decostruiti ora rimescolati sempre ad esprimere l’essenza del personaggio.

GUCCI – “OUVERTURE OF SOMETHING THAT NEVER ENDED” BY GUS VAN SANT (2020)

Nel 2020 Alessandro Michele collabora con Gus Van Sans alla realizzazione di un fashion film diviso in sette episodi con protagonista Silvia Calderoni, che si fa interprete della donna Gucci: androgina, spaziale, ma allo stesso tempo nostalgica e dal sapore retrò. Seguiamo la vita di Silvia dentro strade, palazzi, vicoli, negozi e bar di una Roma sospesa ancora nell’atmosfera degli anni ’70; si parte dalla casa della protagonista fino ad arrivare al suo vintage preferito dove incontra nel frattempo Florence Welch, per poi fare un salto dalla sua vicina di casa Billie Eilish o nel momento del caffè con Arlo Pak. Tra tutti l’episodio più emblematico è sicuramente “A Nightly Walk”, dove Silvia passeggiando di notte per Roma si imbatte in personaggi bizzarri, apparizioni di vestiti, corse sulla Vespa finendo a leggere poesie al campanello degli sconosciuti, restituendo quel vortice bizzarro, vintage e nostalgico proprio di Gucci.

MIU MIU – “WOMEN’S TALES” (2020)

“Women’s tales” è il progetto attraverso cui Miu Miu ha deciso di dare voce alle registe più significative del XXI° secolo, per narrare attraverso la loro privilegiata lente sul mondo la femminilità di oggi. Tra i tanti nomi spiccano sicuramente quello di Zoe Cassavetes, regista del primo episodio, che all’interno di una lussuosa suite d’hotel esplora la ritualità della preparazione femminile, in un trionfo di piccoli gesti e amenità che rimandano al mondo Miu Miu. Isabelle Sandoval, che dirige l’episodio n. 21, tratta invece il tema della sessualità tra una bracciante filippina di seconda generazione e il suo amante bianco, in un dialogo tra il sacro e profano e una carrellata di donne libere di amare chi vogliono. La linea comune di tutti i diversi corti è sempre la lente Miu Miu utilizzata come punto di vista per lo spettatore atto a comprendere la varietà di definizioni che la parola “femminile” porta con sé.

FENDI – “INVITO PERICOLOSO” BY KARL LAGERFELD (2013)

Un’atmosfera tra il gothic e il noir, un castello tanto decadente quanto opulento, inquietanti avvenimenti, personaggi dark sono gli elementi che caratterizzano questo corto diretto da Kaiser Karl, che ha voluto al suo fianco Cara Delevingne e Saskia De Brauw come protagoniste e la sua musa Amanda Harlech nel ruolo della cameriera creepy che spaventa le due avventrici del castello. Tra una cena di pietanze che potrebbero essere avvelenate, un tuttofare di nome Tonino che assomiglia fin troppo a un serial killer e altri espedienti narrativi alla Hitchcock, Karl Lagerfeld ci apre le porte di un lato di Fendi che non potevamo neanche immaginare.

DIOR – “LE CHÂTEAU DU TAROT” BY MATTEO GARRONE (2021)

Matteo Garrone firma questo fashion film con il suo linguaggio fantasy dark, che diventa un modo per raccontare un lato inedito di Dior. Il centro della narrazione è rappresentato dai tarocchi viscontei miniati di Bonifacio Bembo, che vengono consultati dalla cantante e attrice Agnese Claisse per scoprire qualcosa in più rispetto alla dualità che avverte dentro se stessa, dove a volte Agnese è una ragazza femminile con lunghi capelli chiari, altre volte si trasforma in una creatura boyish con capelli corti neri. Tra le varie carte spiccano figure emblematiche come la Papessa, la Giustizia, il Matto, il Diavolo, la Morte, che si reincarnano in abiti Dior e accompagnano la giovane durante il viaggio all’interno del castello incantato. L’ultima carta, la Morte, che è anche la preferita di Maria Grazia Chiuri, rivelerà la verità che si cela dietro al Velo di Maya.

LOUIS VUITTON – “DEAR LOUIS” BY VIVIENNE & TAMAS (2018)

“Dear Louis” è una lettera d’amore firmata Vivienne & Tamas e interpretata da Marta Pawlowska, una ragazza che dopo aver trascorso anni a viaggiare da sola si ritrova su una barca elegante e in pieno stile Vuitton, trascorrendo le sue giornate a guardare il mare alla ricerca della bellezza interiore. Le inquadrature, figlie dell’estetica di Kubrick, ci trasportano da una dimensione più ampia, dove il focus è la nave fino a quella più intima, in cui all’interno della splendida suite “Queen Elizabeth” Marta scrive una lettera d’amore al suo vero Louis, il mozzo di cui si è innamorata.

CHANEL – “ONCE UPON A TIME “ BY KARL LAGERFELD (2013)

Tra gli innumerevoli omaggi realizzati da Karl Lagerfeld per celebrare la figura di Coco Chanel, senza dubbio “Once upon a time” resta l’episodio più significativo, con una magistrale Keira Knightley che interpreta Mademoiselle ai suoi esordi a Deauville, datati 1913. Il corto, realizzato in occasione dei 100 anni della Maison, racconta come le donne francesi dell’epoca, abituate a uno stile barocco e sfarzoso, siano man mano diventate seguaci del rigore semplice ed elegante di Chanel, facendo intendere quanto la figura di Mademoiselle sia stata pregnante per la Storia della moda. Emblematica l’ultima frase: “I love this new designer Chanel […] I wonder where she would be in hundred years from now”.

MONCLER x JW ANDERSON – “VERONICA” BY LUCA GUADAGNINO (2021)

L’estetica queer, romantica e tutta italiana di Luca Guadagnino diventa uno strumento per rileggere i volumi oversize, i colori bold e lo streetwear legato a Moncler in questo corto che vuole porre al centro un’importante riflessione sul giudizio delle icone del presente e del passato. In una Milano popolato da performers di vario genere, la protagonista Veronica, interpretata da Sophie Okonedo, si lascia incantare dall’artista drag Guglielmo Tortarolo e da altri ragazzi che ballano, lasciandosi trasportare dal flusso di energia che avvertiamo anche noi dallo schermo, salvo poi diventare lei stessa una guida portando i ragazzi all’interno di un palazzo signorile dove Veronica si presta a spiegare le opere contenute al suo interno, tra simboli sacri e profani, statue elleniche, e il sottofondo di Senza Fine che crea un ponte immaginario tra presente e passato.

10 Fashion Films

Fashion has always had the ability of merging together all forms of art, creating synergies capable of giving birth to new worlds and new ideas, such as fashion films. Fashion films are short movies that in just a few minutes tell an imaginary story where fashion meets cinema and cinema meets fashion.

These films, sometimes directed by internationally renowned directors, other times by the designers themselves, give viewers the opportunity to capture a sensation, a suggestion, an atmosphere in just a few frames. Below is a personal list of 10 fashion films that are worth seeing and watching again.

PRADA – “THE POSTMAN DREAMS” BY AUTUMN DE WILDE (2015) The fashion film series The Postman Dreams revolves around the dreamlike and imaginative deliveries of a postman, who encounters characters emerging from a timeless dimension that surprise him, making him a spectator of a few but significant minutes of their lives. During his adventures riding the most various means of transportation, the postman encounters an old lady who spends her days in the automatic laundry, then a girl who hits a tree from which Prada bags fall, then children who prepare a toy war fought with a trench reconstructed inside the Bag Gallery, all accompanied by a folk soundtrack played by The Blasting Company and a fun and timeless aesthetic that makes the viewer part of the unattainable world of Prada.

H&M – “COME TOGETHER” BY WES ANDERSON (2016)

In these 3 minutes and 52 seconds, Wes Anderson managed to combine all the elements and themes of his poetic style. The short film is set on Christmas Eve aboard an imaginary H&M Lines train; the conductor, who could only be Adrien Brody, sadly informs the passengers that due to a huge delay, they won’t be able to spend midnight with their loved ones, but offers to serve a Christmas brunch in the dining car instead. From here begins Wes Anderson’s meticulous aesthetic and introspective investigation, as he moves his voyeuristic camera from window to window to show us the quirks, worries, and small neuroses of each passenger. In the final scene, set to the tune of John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas – War is Over,” all the characters come together to share the true meaning of Christmas.

KENZO – “CABIRIA, CHARITY, CHASTITY” BY NATASHA LYONNE (2017)

A surreal and dreamlike narrative that intertwines the imagery of Kenzo with that of Fellini, featuring the American actress Maya Rudolph (note: a regular presence on Saturday Night Live) who becomes a modern-day Giulietta Masina on a quest for self-discovery. The short film revolves around the protagonist’s past, growing up within a vaudevillian theater, and all the characters of this world, at times cruel, at times wonderful, that have shaped her life’s journey. The garments are deconstructed, exaggerated, and bizarre; scenes unfold between clown lessons, unsettling puppet shows, wild dances, obsessive and repetitive speeches, moments of intimacy and spectacle, in a continuous flow of visual consciousness. The ability of Kenzo’s clothes to be both deconstructed and reassembled remains constant, always expressing the essence of the character.

GUCCI – “OVERTURE OF SOMETHING THAT NEVER ENDED” BY GUS VAN SANT (2020)

In 2020, Alessandro Michele collaborates with Gus Van Sant on the creation of a fashion film divided into seven episodes starring Silvia Calderoni, who embodies the Gucci woman: androgynous, ethereal, yet simultaneously nostalgic with a retro flavor. We follow Silvia’s life through the streets, palaces, alleys, shops, and bars of a Rome still suspended in the atmosphere of the 1970s; starting from the protagonist’s home, we follow her to her favorite vintage spot where she encounters Florence Welch in the meantime, then hops over to her neighbor Billie Eilish’s or for a coffee moment with Arlo Pak. Among all, the most emblematic episode is undoubtedly “A Nightly Walk,” where Silvia, wandering through Rome at night, encounters eccentric characters, apparitions of clothing, Vespa rides, ending up reading poems at strangers’ doorbells, capturing that bizarre, vintage, and nostalgic whirlwind typical of Gucci.

MIU MIU – “WOMEN’S TALES” (2020)

“Women’s Tales” is the project through which Miu Miu has decided to give voice to the most significant female directors of the 21st century, allowing them to narrate the femininity of today through their privileged lens on the world. Among the many names, Zoe Cassavetes stands out, directing the first episode, where she explores the ritual of female preparation within a luxurious hotel suite, in a triumph of small gestures and amenities that reflect the Miu Miu world. Isabelle Sandoval, who directs episode number 21, instead tackles the theme of sexuality between a second-generation Filipino laborer and her white lover, in a dialogue between the sacred and profane and a showcase of women free to love whomever they choose. The common thread among all the different shorts is always the Miu Miu lens used as a point of view for the viewer to understand the variety of definitions that the word “feminine” carries with it.

FENDI – “INVITO PERICOLOSO” BY KARL LAGERFELD (2013) An atmosphere blending gothic and noir, a castle as decadent as it is opulent, unsettling events, and dark characters are the elements that characterize this short film directed by Kaiser Karl. He chose Cara Delevingne and Saskia De Brauw as the protagonists, with his muse Amanda Harlech portraying the creepy maid who frightens the two adventurers in the castle. Amidst a dinner of dishes that could be poisoned, a handyman named Tonino who resembles a serial killer all too much, and other narrative devices reminiscent of Hitchcock, Karl Lagerfeld opens the doors to a side of Fendi we couldn’t even imagine.

DIOR – “LE CHÂTEAU DU TAROT” BY MATTEO GARRONE (2021) Matteo Garrone signs this fashion film with his dark fantasy language, which becomes a way to tell an unseen side of Dior. The center of the narrative is Bonifacio Bembo’s illuminated Visconti tarot cards, which are consulted by singer and actress Agnese Claisse to discover something more than the duality she feels inside herself, where sometimes Agnese is a feminine girl with long light hair, other times she turns into a boyish creature with short black hair. Prominent among the various cards are emblematic figures such as the Papess, Justice, the Fool, the Devil, and Death, who are reincarnated in Dior clothes and accompany the young girl on her journey inside the enchanted castle. The last card, Death, who is also Maria Grazia Chiuri’s favorite, will reveal the truth behind Maya’s Veil.

LOUIS VUITTON – “DEAR LOUIS” BY VIVIENNE & TAMAS (2018)

“Dear Louis” is a love letter signed by Vivienne & Tamas and interpreted by Marta Pawlowska, a girl who, after spending years traveling alone, finds herself on an elegant boat in full Vuitton style, spending her days gazing at the sea in search of inner beauty. The shots, reminiscent of Kubrick’s aesthetic, transport us from a wider dimension, where the focus is on the ship, to a more intimate one, where inside the splendid “Queen Elizabeth” suite, Marta writes a love letter to her true Louis, the sailor she has fallen in love with.

CHANEL – “ONCE UPON A TIME “ BY KARL LAGERFELD (2013)

Among the countless tributes made by Karl Lagerfeld to celebrate the figure of Coco Chanel, undoubtedly “Once upon a time” remains the most significant episode, with a masterful Keira Knightley portraying Mademoiselle at her beginnings in Deauville, dating back to 1913. The short film, created on the occasion of the Maison’s 100th anniversary, tells how French women of the time, accustomed to a baroque and lavish style, gradually became followers of Chanel’s simple and elegant rigor, suggesting how significant Mademoiselle’s figure was for the history of fashion. Emblematic is the last line: “I love this new designer Chanel […] I wonder where she would be in a hundred years from now.”

MONCLER x JW ANDERSON – “VERONICA” BY LUCA GUADAGNINO (2021)

Luca Guadagnino‘s queer, romantic, and distinctly Italian aesthetic becomes a tool to reinterpret oversize volumes, bold colors, and streetwear linked to Moncler in this short film that aims to center on an important reflection on the judgment of present and past icons. Set in a Milan populated by performers of various genres, the protagonist Veronica, portrayed by Sophie Okonedo, becomes enchanted by the drag artist Guglielmo Tortarolo and other dancing boys, letting herself be carried away by the flow of energy that we also feel from the screen. Eventually, she becomes a guide herself, leading the boys into a stately palace where Veronica takes on the role of explaining the works contained within, among sacred and profane symbols, Hellenic statues, and the backdrop of “Senza Fine,” which creates an imaginary bridge between present and past.
