The character of the Amazon, relegated to myth and legend despite authoritative historical sources, is a prime example of how male dominance over information has resulted in the impossibility of a female narrative.

The dissemination of such tales, always representing -and not coincidentally- the defeat or seduction of females, fully embodies what society still tries to mask: the female is, in the narrative, only an
in-depth textual parenthesis in the story of the history of man and humanity. The Amazon remains, then, the one who does not see herself through the men’s gaze, the one who does not adhere to the standards of the feminine universe that has been offered to us as the only
alternative, but who creates, seeks, scouts and experiences all other possibilities.

In the essay “Les Guérillères,” Monique Wittig hypothesizes a utopian society of females only, with its own history, its own culture, and an auto-narration that is passed down from generation to generation.
The construction of language itself is inductive: the experience of the individual becomes a popular form of expression for similar concepts.
Every experience, every discovery or new experience is gathered and collected in the “Feminary” a sacred book to which each has free access and to which each can add her own narrative.

The self-determination we have always lacked cannot but still be our greatest yearning.
