A journey through traditional tribal musical instruments, demonstrating their connection with electronic music through the use of samples. This combination creates a harmonious blend of sounds and a deep connection with their cultural roots.

Didjeridu (Digeridoo)

The Didjeridu is a wind instrument of the Aborigina people of Australia. Most of the times this instrument is played during the ritual ceremonies. This aerophone has a mesmerizing drony sound. The british producer Aphex Twin obtained the sound of this instrument through massive sound processing on his 1992 EP Digeridoo released by R&S records.

Darabouka

The Darabouka, also known as the Tabla, is a goblet shaped percussion from the Middle-East, Central Asia and Northern Africa. It’s a fundamental instrument in the belly dance music ensemble. It’s heavily sampled in electronic music, we’ve chosen Roger Sanchez’s Afterthought under the Underground Solution moniker, this is the last track of the 1990 EP Luv Dancin’, released by Strictly Rhythm.

The Sitar

The Sitar is a String Instrument from Norhtern India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. After George Harrison played it on the Beatles’ 1965 song Norwegian Wood (The Bird Has Flown), -included on the Rubber Soul album – it became one of the most common Traditional instruments played or sampled in Popular music. Wecan find Sitars’ samples on many songs in electronic music. We’ve chosen Every Grain Of Palestinian Sandby the Mancunian producer Muslimgauze, this song is in the 1998 album Mullah Said.

The Bag Pipe

The bag pipes are wind instruments popular in differentparts of the world. The instrument is constituted by different chanters, at least one of them must be a drone chanter, a bag and an air supply. We’d not affirm that these kind of instruments are massively sampled or played in electronic music, but in 2022’s album Aethiopes by Billy Woods we can find a sample of a bagpipe on the song No Hard Feelings. The sample comes from Seppia, a song by the italian avant-progband Picchio Dal Pozzo. Can’t tell what kind of Bagpipe or double flute is played on the originalsample.

The African Harp

There are many different types of african harps, in thiscase we’re talking about the Ngombi Harp, a bow harp (the name comes from the curved shape of the instrument’s neck) from Central Africa. For this instrument we’re picking Kadi Yombo by Papé Nziengui, a brilliant 2022 release by the label Awesome Tapes from Africa. This record is an intriguing mixture of Traditional music and electronic music, there’s notonly the Ngombi Harp, but also Drum Machines and Synthesizers.
